An Egyptian-French alliance has won a project to develop and modernize a logistics railway line connecting Cairo and Alexandria, with a total cost of €540 million. According to informed sources speaking to “Economy of the East with Bloomberg,” the alliance will handle the design, supply, and operation of mechanical systems, signaling, communications, and central control systems. Work is expected to begin in mid-next year and be completed by 2030.
The project includes the construction of a single-track line from the dry port in 6th of October City to Beni Salama Station in Qalyubia Governorate, covering approximately 68 kilometers, as well as linking the Wahat line with Upper Egypt trains. It also involves renewing and upgrading signaling systems along 67 kilometers of the same route, executing double-tracking and upgrading works on other branch lines, and enhancing signaling, communications, and track systems.
In a related development, the Egyptian National Railway Authority plans to select the winning alliance to carry out civil works for the “Robeiki – 10th of Ramadan – Belbeis” railway line project, with a budget of EGP 7 billion this month. According to government sources cited by “Al-Borsa” newspaper, local banks will arrange the necessary financing in cooperation with the winning alliance, which the authority will officially announce soon.
Last month, the authority launched a tender for four qualified alliances to execute the civil works for the 69-kilometer development line. The authority is currently reviewing the technical and financial bids to determine the winning contractor and proceed with project execution.
The “Robeiki – 10th of Ramadan – Belbeis” project aims to reduce transportation costs, enhance supply chain efficiency, and increase the railway’s share in the domestic freight market. It will also strengthen public transportation by connecting the Robeiki area with 10th of Ramadan City and Belbeis, alleviating road congestion, facilitating the movement of people and goods, and supporting urban and industrial development plans in these strategic areas.
The project will link the dry port and logistics zone in 10th of Ramadan with the railway network, enabling cargo delivery to seaports such as El Sokhna and Al-Adabiya on the Red Sea, and Port Said, Damietta, Alexandria, and Dekheila on the Mediterranean. Additionally, the dry port in 10th of Ramadan will be connected to a planned dry port near the Administrative Capital high-speed electric train station via the regional ring road, ensuring the efficient transportation of all types of goods across the country.
